Typography and Design

The importance of Typography and Design

The importance of Typography and design

In today’s lesson we learnt about the importance of typography and how it can totally change how a title sequence looks and how the audience can interpret it. The fonts used have to fit the genre specifically otherwise it will not look right and may give a different impression to the audience about the movie.

When analysing a title sequence there are five Things to consider:

  •  Genre

  • Style/mood

  • Possible narratives

  • Production values

  • Themes

Planning of Title Sequence

Planning of Title Sequence

Today we started our story boarding, and planning of our title sequence. We looked at different ideas and editing we could use for our title sequence. We could possible have two of our main characters in our  title sequence, Anton and Terry Jones. The credits are likely to be place on plain playing cards, this potteries a gangster film.

We listed a number of ideas

Editing:
  • Fading into Shots
  • Black and White (Right or Wrong)
  • Close up of Anton hands on head
  • Voices in his head
  • Beeping Hospital sound
Ideas:
  • Exchanging money
  • Map of London
  • Pin pointing (plotting)
  • Club Cards
  • Ticking clock (sound)
  • Cooking books
  • Letter of death
  • Burning Money
  • Police flashing Lights
  • London street signs
  • Home with crime sign
  • Voice over (poem)
  • Hospital setting
We also had to consider the order of our Credits, which will be

  1. Studio Logos
  2. Production company presents
  3. Film Title
  4. Actors Names
  5. Any of the following, Casting, Production designer, Costume, Make-up, Special effects,Music and Sound editor
  6. Line Producer
  7. Exec Producer
  8. Producer
  9. Editor
  10. Director of Photography
  11. Writer(s)
  12. Director

Film Studios

Film Studios
Aims: To be able to indicate how Films are produced and distributed.
: To research and decide, on the film studio that will produce/distribute our film.

A Film Studio is a company that produces and or distributes motion pictures.

As a class we listed around 30 Film Studios.

  • Fox
  • Pixar
  • Paramount
  • Dream works
  • Lions gate
  • Miramax
  • Touchstone
  • MGM
  • Sony
  • Studio C
  • Film Four
  • Disney
  • Universal
  • Orion
  • Fox searchlight
  • Marvel
  • Nickelodeon
  • Columbia

There are Six main Studios operating today.
  1. Walt Disney
  2. Universal
  3. Warner Bros
  4. Sony/Columbia
  5. Fox
  6. Paramount

Each of these will own Subdivisions which specialise in niche films. This is based on genre and budget.

This is the order in which the money is spilt in.

A distribution company is in charge of getting the film out to audiences, this involves organising for the film to receive an age certificate by regulation bodies such as the BBFC and MPPA arranging exhibitions.

In the second part of our lesson we the went away in a groups to research which film studio would produce/distribute our films. In our group we decided that Lionsgate would produce/distribute Inherited Empire because

Fight Scene

Foley Sound

Fight Scene
After shooting our short fight scene we went away and created our foley sound and edited the clip. I think that the we created a comedy fight scene, we learnt that sound can make a big difference to any clip as it can change and set tension or make people laugh. Originally our scene was meant to be a tense  one but during the edit we discovered that it was funny more than a serious clip. This is suggested through out the whole clip.

What we used?
We used nuts, carrots and meat to replicate sounds of breaking bones and someone being punched in the face. We also had to record some sounds from body parts such as beating my chest and slapping our hands on our thighs. This will help us when we make our Title Sequence, as it will make sure that our target audience understands just from the sound what our title is trying to communicate to them.

Sound Design

Sound Design
Aims:
1.       To be able to indicate what the three different types of Sound Design are.
2.       To create a Foley Track for the fight sequence that we have filmed.

What is Sound Design?

The creation and layering of dialogue, background noise and other sound effects to create a sophisticated aural environment. An example, in a scene where the setting is a rainforest, the sounds of various birds and animals would be dubbed in after recording to enhance the scene and make it look real.
There are 3 types of sound creation
  1.        Realism
  2.        Hyper Realism
  3.        Unrealism/ Surrealism
After the lesson on sound, we went off in our groups to create our own sounds, using the film we had produced we had meat, carrots, nuts and kick a door. We then used the sounds in our film for example the meat being punched helped us enhance the punching sound from our actual film. This was a good lesson and learnt a lot about Foley Sound, this will defiantly help us when making our title sequences.

Codes and Conventions

Codes and conventions of a title sequence

  • Details of cast and crew.
  • The film title.
  • An introduction to characters or character type.
  • Indication of place.
  • Indication of historical period.
  • Information regarding mood and tone.
  • Introduction to signature theme tune – leitmotif.
  • Information about genre.
  • Enigma- The question that needs an answer.
  • Patterns and types of editing.
  • Mise-en-scene and cinematography that will be echoed or elaborated upon later in the film.

When looking at these codes and conventions, the basic fundamentals of a pre title sequence is to give the audience a little taster of what the film will be about and the themes that will carry on throughout the film. The pre title sequence is also to let you you know who directed the film and who is casting in it, it also lets you know producers and who helped make the film. When i come to make my own pre title sequence i will pay extremely close to attension to theses codes and conventions as these are gonna be the basis to my plan.
